About Us

「ゼシムシャ:大学生活」is a codename for the Japanese culture project by Sharon, Sherry, Xian-Meng and Muhamad from University of Calgary, Canada. The project as a whole is part of the requirement fulfilment of the Japanese Language and Culture Group Study Program 2015. Carried out at Senshu University in Japan, this project took about one month to complete.

ゼシムシャ:大学生活  explores the local university students' life in Japan - focusing on how the Japanese culture influences the students' lifestyle in contrast to that of Canada. The objective of this project is to engage in the Japanese university environment, thereby experiencing first-hand the cultural influences that may present, apart from improving the Japanese "survival" skills of each member.

(Leaving the technicalities behind, we have now arrived at the fun part.)

ゼシムシャ  though may sound "cheesy japanesey", does not have any actual meaning in Japanese. Rightly so - it is an acronym for the members' names brilliantly arranged, in Katakana!

ンミン
ェリー
ハマッド
シャロン

大学生活  is (as obvious as it seems) the topic that they cover in this blog. The 4-kanji word that best describes their work, they said.

(Let's get to know each member more closely, shall we?)

Sharon Dong (シャロン) is a second year Cellular Biology major at University of Calgary minoring in Japanese. She loves learning languages and being able to understand different worldviews. Japan's fusion of modernity and traditionalism in its culture interests her greatly. Japanese rock and anime have a special place in her heart for being awesome.

Sherry Wang (シェリー) is a third-year Japanese major undergraduate student at University of Calgary. She loves Japanese music and is very interested in Japanese pop culture and traditional arts.

Xian-Meng Low (ゼンミン) is a Chemistry major with keen interest in Japanese and Computer Science. He is currently a second-year undergraduate student at University of Calgary. (this is just a sample, replace it with your own bio excerpt)

Muhamad Asyraaf (ムハマッド) is a second-year Geology major undergraduate student at University of Calgary currently minoring in both Japanese and Geophysics. He is very interested in Japanese traditional culture and martial arts.
